Help thread: Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery

This thread is for Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery. I want to understand the logic, not just throw a shiny part at the bike and hope it feels appreciated. The reset itself may be simple, but I want to know what should be checked before clearing the message so I am not hiding a real service problem.

For Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery, I would confirm the oil/service was actually done, then do the reset. A dashboard reminder is annoying, but a hidden missed service is worse.

If you can, post a photo of the part, connector, plug color, or dash message. A decent photo can save half a page of wrong assumptions. That is how I would approach Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery before spending money.

Does Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery usually point to one system, or can it be caused by something completely upstream?

Thomas Spagnoli: workshop approach for Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery

For Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery, I would slow the job down for ten minutes and make the evidence visible. Guessing feels fast, but it usually makes the repair longer.

  1. Verify the service work was actually completed: oil, filter, level, leaks, brakes, tires and any scheduled inspections.
  2. Use the reset procedure only after confirming there is no active fault behind the message.
  3. If the reminder returns immediately, scan modules and check switch/level sensors before repeating the reset.
  4. Document mileage and date so the next service interval is meaningful.

Keep the original setup in mind. Many faults appear after a small change, and the change is often more useful than the symptom.

This is also the kind of method I teach in the free Motorcycle Mechanics Course here on the platform: observe, measure, confirm, repair, then test again. It is much easier to solve Yamaha R1 dash resets during cranking with new battery when the process is clear.

If you report back, include the measured values, not only whether it felt better. Numbers make the thread useful for the next rider too.

Good point about documenting the baseline. I took photos before touching anything, which may be my most professional move this week. I like that this turned into a checklist instead of a guessing contest.
